PhD Student Opening: Arkansas State University – Lorence Laboratory

Announcement:

The Lorence Laboratory at Arkansas State University invites applications for a PhD student to join the project “Comparative Genomics and Phenomics Approach to Discover Genes Underlying Heat Stress Resilience in Cereals” funded by the National Science Foundation. This work takes places as part of a vibrant collaborative research consortium involving faculty at University of Nebraska Lincoln, Kansas State University and Arkansas State University.  The project will create the foundational knowledge needed to improve wheat and rice yields under stressful environments. Trends at the global level, regional level, and farm level point to an increase in minimum night temperatures that is significantly higher than the rate of increase in maximum day temperatures. Increases in night temperatures significantly decrease the grain yield and quality of major crops such as rice and wheat, which, together, provide over 50% of the caloric intake for humans worldwide. To ensure global food security, there is an urgent need to improve crop resilience to high night temperature stress-induced yield and quality losses. This project builds upon complementary expertise and infrastructure in Nebraska, Kansas, and Arkansas to develop novel research infrastructure and make discoveries that ultimately lead to development of higher yielding and resilient cultivars for U.S. farmers.

 

Specific Duties:

The student will work as part of a multidisciplinary team testing the effect of high night temperature stress in the physiology and yield of a rice diversity panel that will be grown in experimental plots in Arkansas. This student will also explore the link between ascorbic acid content and chalkiness in the grain of this rice diversity panel. High-throughput plant phenotyping approaches will be a key component of this project.

 

Requirements:

We are seeking a highly motivated student with knowledge (MS) in plant biology, plant biochemistry, biotechnology or related field and hands-on experience conducting field work with plants. A good command in both oral and written English is required. Additional experience working with cereals is a plus. Ability to work well with a team, self-motivate, work independently as well as possess high enthusiasm for science are the most important attributes we are looking for.

The selected candidate will receive 3 years of stipend and tuition. This student will be also be provided unique cross-training opportunities as well as resources to participate at regional, national and international meetings.

Plant Science Conference Takes Root in Nebraska

A two-day plant science symposium will be April 6-7 at the Lincoln Marriott Cornhusker Hotel. The event theme is “Predictive Crop Design: Genome to Phenome,” with speakers from the University of California at Berkeley, Duke University, and private industry—including both startup and multinational companies.

This conference is part of the Nebraska Research & Innovation Conference (NRIC) annual series, conducted by Nebraska EPSCoR and funded by the National Science Foundation (NSF). In 2016, a five-year NSF EPSCoR project established the Center for Root & Rhizobiome Innovation (CRRI): a collaboration to research crop productivity focused on plants’ root microbiome. CRRI scientists--from the University of Nebraska-Lincoln, University of Nebraska at Kearney, University of Nebraska Medical Center and Doane University--aim to grow scientific knowledge that will better feed the growing population.

Students and faculty interested in attending the symposium should register before March 23 at http://nric.nebraska.edu (note: deadline for discount hotel room reservations at the group rate is March 15). There is no fee for registration. Attendees may also present a relevant poster in the event’s poster session on the afternoon of April 6 (posters must be registered no later than March 22).

NSF released two Dear Colleague Letters regarding graduate student opportunities in Chemistry and Math:

Dear Colleague Letter: Improving Graduate Student Preparedness for the Chemistry Workforce (NSF 17-045)

NSF has identified as one of its Agency Priority Goals an effort to improve graduate student preparedness for entering the workforce (http://www.performance.gov/node/40262?view=public#apg). As part of this effort, the Division of Chemistry (CHE) supports masters and doctoral students so that they can acquire the knowledge, experience, and skills needed for highly productive careers, inside and outside of academe. This Dear Colleague Letter describes opportunities for supplemental funding to enhance the training experience of graduate students currently supported by active CHE research grants.

Dear Colleague Letter: NSF Mathematical Sciences Graduate Internship (NSF 17-042)

The National Science Foundation (NSF) Division of Mathematical Sciences (DMS) aims to provide opportunities to enrich the training of graduate doctoral students in the Mathematical Sciences through the provision of a NSF DMS funded summer research internship program. Towards this objective, DMS has partnered with the Oak Ridge Institute for Science and Education (ORISE) which is managed by Oak Ridge Associated Universities (ORAU) for the Department of Energy, to establish the NSF Mathematical Sciences Graduate Internship program.

The immediate goal of the program is to fund approximately twenty internships, primarily at the National Laboratories. The longer-term goals are to expand the program and to include private industries and nonprofit organizations as hosts. The program is intended to introduce doctoral students in mathematics to interesting applications of mathematical or statistical theories outside of academia. The internships are aimed at students who are interested in understanding the application of advanced mathematical and statistical techniques to "real world" problems, regardless of whether they plan to pursue an academic or nonacademic career.
